How the Young Israel of Malden Torah Came to Be
And now write for yourselves this song. (Deuteronomy 31:19)
The song referenced in this verse refers to the Torah itself. This is the mitzvah to write a Torah and it can be fulfilled by becoming a partner in a new Torah by authorizing the writing of even one letter in it.
With this in mind, Congregation Beth Israel of Malden is excited to announce that we are performing this mitzvah with the dedication of a new Torah - The Young Israel of Malden (YIM) Sefer Torah.
This is the story of our Young Israel of Malden Sefer Torah
Jewish history is a chain that stretches from Avraham to the coming of Moshiach. Every generation and every community is a link in the continuity of Judaism through the transmission of the Torah. Every community has its pillars that make their unique contribution to this continuity. For the Jewish community of Malden one such pillar was the Young Israel of Malden.
The Young Israel of Malden was established in the 1930s and served the Malden Jewish community for over 70 years. It was a lovely, warm Shul where hard working, sincere and devoted people came to pray, study Torah, and celebrate the Yomim Tovim (Jewish holidays) together.
As the 1960s came and went, many Jewish families began to leave Malden. Young Israel kept the torch alive for the next several decades, holding services even while minyanim became scarce. Eventually minyanim were no longer sustainable even for the High Holidays.
In an effort to preserve the memory of that pillar, the last president of the Young Israel, Sumner Bivetsky, of blessed memory, worked with Congregation Beth Israel of Malden, under the leadership of Rabbi Yitzchak Rabinowitz to memorialize the Young Israel. Beth Israel agreed to dedicate its beit midrash/library, and to write a new Sefer Torah in commemoration of the Young Israel of Malden and its members.
This is a very exciting time for the Beth Israel community and we are honored to pay tribute to the Young Israel that served the Jewish community in Malden so well.
Please join Congregation Beth Israel in this special mitzvah that will memorialize this special pillar of the Malden Jewish community.
