Halachot for Shavout 5780
Thursday
Remember to make Eruv Tavshilin
Leil Shavuot, Thursday Night, Thursday Night
Maariv for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Shavuot. If you are davening at home, Maariv ideally should not begin before tzeis hakochavim which is at 9:03 pm.(This is the general rule for Shavuot. For this year, if you are davening at Shul, Maariv will be davened earlier than usual but Kiddush at home should not be made before 9:03 pm)
We recite Kiddush for Yom Tov with Shehechiyanu.
Friday, May 29, 2020 – Shavuot Day 1
For Those who stay up all night learning and want to daven Tefillat Vatikin
The earliest time for tallit, is at 4:07 am.
One should try to time davening so that one reaches the Amidah at sunrise, which is at 5:11 am.
Birchot Hashachar for those staying up the entire night
If one slept for a half hour at night, even if it was in the course of learning, one may recite all of the brachot
The brachot of netillat yadayim and asher yotzar may be recited when washing one’s hands (with a cup) after using the restroom, provided that it is after alot hashachar (dawn) (3:21 am).
The bracha on tallit (gadol) may be recited. If someone doesn’t wear a tallis and wants to fulfill the bracha on tzitzit, one can either hear the bracha from someone who wears a tallit or one can switch to a different pair of tzitzit (either before or after davening) and recite the bracha.
Elokai Neshama and Hama’avir Sheina are usually recited by someone who slept that night on behalf of those who didn’t. If nobody is available to recite those berakhot, these blessings may be recited even by one who did not sleep.
If one slept on Thursday afternoon (and certainly if one slept Thursday night), one may recite Birchot HaTorah. If not, one can listen to the brachot from someone who did sleep. After hearing the brachot one should recite yevorechecha and eilu devarim as is usually done so that the blessings are followed immediately by some Torah learning. If nobody is available to recite the berakhot, one should have in mind to fulfill these brachot when reciting Ahavah Rabbah. If one fulfills these brachot with Ahavah Rabbah, one must learn a portion of Torah immediately after the Amidah. If none of the above was done before or during davening, then one can say the Birchot Hatorah after waking up.
All other Birchot Hashachar may be recited by one who was awake the entire night.
Note: One who stays up the entire night until Amud Hashachar, goes to sleep, and davens after waking up may recite the brachot of Elokai Neshama, Hama’avir Sheina, and Birchot HaTorah if there is no one else to recite them for him.
Birchot Keriat Shema begin with המאיר לארץ.
Shacharit Shemoneh esrei for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Shavuot followed by complete Hallel with its brachot.
The Torah reading for the first day is בחדש השלישי (Shemot 19:1-20:23), the maftir is וביום הבכורים (Bamidbar 28:26-31) and the haftarah is from Yechezkel 1:1-28, 3:12.
There is no requirement to recite Akdamot when davening at home but one is permitted to do so.
Musaf for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Shavuot.
Shir shel yom for Friday.
Mincha for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Shavuot. Mincha should be recited before shekiyah (sunset) which is at 8:12 pm.
If one prepared an eruv tavshilin before Yom Tov, one may cook on Yom Tov for Shabbat. One should try to ensure that all of the food that is cooked is potentially edible by sundown (8:12 pm). For this reason, some communities have the practice of accepting Shabbat early whenever an eruv tavshilin is used. This is the recommended practice. One cannot accept Shabbat before plag hamincha (6:39 pm). Friday night candle lighting should take place after plag hamincha and no later than 8:13 pm. Once the candles are lit, all of the stringencies of Shabbat are in effect on women.
The bracha for candle lighting is להדליק נר של שבת ויום טוב.

The Torah reading for the second day is עשר תעשר (Devarim 14:22-16:17), the maftir is וביום הבכורים (Bamidbar 28:26-31) and the haftarah is from Chabakuk 2:20-3:19. One may recite Yetziv Pitgam at home (though it is not required).
