Chanukah

Candle lighting time begins 10 minutes after sunset. If you are at services or otherwise unable to light at that time, do so immediately upon arriving at home.

The candles must burn for at least 30 minutes after tzet hakochavim (when the stars come out; approximately 45 minutes after sunset). Use enough oil or candles large enough to last this duration. If you use the small wax candles that burn for only 30 minutes, light them when the stars come out. If that is not possible, light as soon as you can afterward. Refer to this year’s Chanukah Candle lighting Chart below for exact times.

On Friday night, light the menorah before Shabbat candles, as candles cannot be lit once Shabbat begins. Use large Shabbat candles or enough oil to ensure they burn until 30 minutes after tzet hakochavim. If you don’t have enough large candles, ensure at least one burns for the required time. For oil, fill the menorah appropriately.

After sunset, we do not eat before we light candles. If this is a problem for you, please consult with the Rabbi.
