Those Were The Years

Insights into Parshat Vayechi by an alumnus of Yeshivat Sha’alvim, by Rav Re’uven Ungar of Sha’alvim.

“And Yaakov lived in Egypt 17 years, the days of the life of Yaakov were 147 years” (Sefer Bereshit 48:28).  This is obvious-  Yaakov informed Pharoah (47:9) that he was 130 years years old when meeting him, because he died at the age of 147, clearly he resided in Egypt for 17 years!

The Ohr HaChayim explains that these 17 years marked the true “living” of Yaakov. The life of Yaakov was full of trials and tribulations- hatred from his brother, tension with his father in law, troubles concerning his children (Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Dinah, Yosef, Binyamin). Such situations did not foster “living” to its fullest extent. Only upon being reunited with his family, in a cohesive, friendly atmosphere, could Yaakov truly “live”.

This “living” is referring to residence in Egypt. Obviously, the ideal climate for Jewish living is in The Land of Israel. Perhaps for this reason our forefather is referred here as “Yaakov” and not “Yisrael”. The former term marks the status- both of Yaakov and of his descendants- in a non-ideal climate and environment. Thus the “living” in Egypt referred to Yaakov. The ideal “living” of Yisrael transpires exclusively in The Land of Israel.
