The First Born Son

Insights into Parshat Shemot by Rav Re’uven Ungar of Sha’alvim.

“And Hashem says: Israel is My son, My first-born (bechori).” (Sefer Shemot 4:22).

What is the comparison between a bechor to his father and the Jewish People to Hashem? Why does Hashem refer to us as His bechor?

The Meshech Chochma explains as follows: The bechor makes his father into a parent. Therefore he receives an additional portion of the inheritance. Similarly, the Rule of Hashem – His status as Father of the world – is realized via the Jewish People. We advertise His presence!

May we act in accordance with our vital role.
